5 Ways To Build Confidence As A Beginner

Confidence is an essential trait that can help you achieve your goals, build strong relationships, and excel in your career or as I say to Do Your BAM (Bust A Move) Thang! However, building confidence can be a daunting task, especially for beginners. In our world of social media platforms, it can be even tougher for some because they are always comparing themselves to someone else’s journey. Fortunately, there are several ways to build confidence, and I’m sharing five effective strategies you can implement immediately.

1. Set achievable goals

Setting goals is an effective way to build confidence, but it’s essential to set realistic and achievable goals. I know you have that beginner energy but, you should be practical in your approach. When you set goals that are too challenging or unrealistic, you may end up feeling frustrated and demotivated, which can damage your confidence. Instead, break down your larger goals into smaller, achievable ones. This way, you can experience success more frequently, which can help boost your confidence.

For example, if you’re learning a new skill, such as playing a musical instrument, start with simple exercises and gradually work your way up to more complex pieces. This way, you can enjoy the process and experience a sense of accomplishment along your journey. Celebrate your wins along the way!

2. Practice, practice, practice

Practice is essential for building confidence. When you practice a skill or activity repeatedly, you become more comfortable and confident in your abilities. Whether you’re learning a new language, playing a sport, or giving a presentation, regular practice can help you build your skills and confidence.

To make the most of your practice sessions, focus on quality rather than quantity. Set aside a specific time to practice, and give your full attention to the task at hand. You might have to turn on your ‘do not disturb function’ so that you can remain focused. Be gentle with yourself and remember that building confidence takes time and effort.

3. Surround yourself with positive influences

Your community or circle of influence matters and can have a significant impact on your confidence. Negative people or situations can drain your energy and damage your self-esteem. On the other hand, positive people and environments can uplift and motivate you.

Seek out positive influences in your life, such as supportive friends, inspiring mentors, accountability partners, or uplifting books and podcasts. Connect with people who share your interests and values and who will encourage, motivate, and hold you accountable to pursue your goals.

4. Embrace failure

Fear of failure is a common obstacle to building confidence. However, it’s important to remember that failure is a natural part of the learning process and your journey. Instead of avoiding failure, embrace it as an opportunity to learn and grow. I believe there are no wasted experiences if we can get the lessons.

When you experience setbacks or make mistakes, take the time to reflect on what went wrong and what you can do differently next time. This way, you can learn from your failures and apply these lessons to future endeavors. By embracing failure, you can build resilience and confidence in your abilities. Failures help prepare us for what our future selves will need.

5. Take care of yourself

Self-care is essential for building confidence. When you take care of yourself, you feel better physically and mentally, which can have a positive impact on your self-esteem. Make time for activities that make you feel good, such as exercise, prayer, meditation, or spending time with loved ones.

In addition to self-care, taking care of your appearance can also boost your confidence. When you look good, you feel good, so take the time to dress nicely (nice doesn’t have to equal expensive), groom yourself, and practice good hygiene.

One of my favorite authors, Brene Brown, shares more insight on this topic in an article, The Courage to Not Know that offers more insight and support. You can dig even deeper in her book, Dare To Lead.

Lastly, building confidence as a beginner can be challenging, but it’s possible. By setting achievable goals, practicing regularly, surrounding yourself with positive influences, embracing failure, and taking care of yourself, you can build your confidence and achieve your goals.
